Katia graciously agreed to visit our blog today to answer our questions, provide networking tips for entrepreneurs, and chat about mentorship.

Welcome Katia! Positive Fabulous Women (PFW) has a fantastic website with many stories of women entrepreneurs. Why do you feel it is important to promote and inspire women entrepreneurs?

Katia Millar: Let’s face it, entrepreneurship can be challenging and often quite lonely. This is particularly the case for women entrepreneurs who are often juggling a number of responsibilities in pursuit of their dreams. Many rarely get acknowledged for a job well-done or for meeting a deadline, etc. I think it’s important for all of us to take the time and pat each other on the back once in a while, to shine the spotlight on someone who is making a difference. As someone with a network of women entrepreneurs, it is my privilege to hold space for others and cheer them on so they can continue to do what they love and love what they do.

What can and should entrepreneurs do to build their network / support system?

KM: I always say your visibility is more critical to the growth and success of your business than your ability — and therefore should be a priority for all business owners.

When you’re building a network and creating a support system, it’s imperative to show up consistently, powerfully and authentically. It’s easy to show up when things are going well – but not so much when things are challenging and not going according to plan. When that happens, we tend to hide. Yet when we hide, nothing happens and we’re not serving others. The single most important thing entrepreneurs can do to grow their business is to show up – for themselves, for their business and in their personal lives. Simple, not always easy.

What can entrepreneurs do in their everyday life to help inspire and promote others in the small business community?

KM: The most important thing for all of us to do is to connect, contribute and share our gifts, talents, knowledge and wisdom with each other. And we have to keep it real and do it from a place of integrity.

Many small business owners seek out mentors. What tips or advice can you offer when seeking or choosing a mentor?

KM: It’s important to have clarity as to what it is you need from a mentor and be willing to let them know how they can best support you. You need to share openly and authentically of yourself and where things are at. It’s also important to be patient in allowing the relationship to grow and the trust to build.

How can an entrepreneur recognize when they are ready to become a mentor?

KM: You are ready when you can set your own agenda aside and just be present with someone else.

How do you create an elevator pitch?

KM: Start by ditching the pitch and focusing instead on how you can be of service to others. What’s in it for them? What is the transformation you’re offering?

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer our questions and provide some awesome networking tips for entrepreneurs! Before you go, is there anything else you’d like to add about networking for entrepreneurs?

KM: Networking is not an Olympic sport. Be choosy where you spend your time and money. Instead of going to a ton of events all the time, pick 1-2 that resonates with you the most. The goal is to connect with people you actually enjoy spending time with.

Also, let’s not forget social media provides us with an opportunity to network with like-minded people from the comfort of our own homes, so it’s always good to balance the online with the offline.
