The Vernal Equinox just passed, which means that Spring is finally here (although it may not feel like it just yet). Before the temperature climbs up too high and all you want to do is go outside and enjoy the sunshine, it’s time to get down to business and give your place a thorough cleaning. There aren’t many better feelings than coming home to a clean house every day, and we’ll help you get there. Here are a few of our tips on getting started and a helpful checklist so you don’t forget anything!

1. Recruit some help

Cleaning your whole house by yourself can be a monumental task. Why not make it a family activity? Not only will the extra hands make for lighter work, it can be a great chance to spend time with your spouse and kids. You can even use this as an opportunity to teach your children the importance of cleaning and get them to enjoy it.

2. Make a killer playlist

Scrubbing surfaces and sorting through your old stuff can feel like a monotonous chore (because technically, it is). However, with the right playlist, it can feel like a dance party. No matter the genre you’re into, pick songs with a high number of beats per minute and/or upbeat melodies – the more you can sing and dance along the better. Time will just fly by!

3. Buy all your supplies beforehand

There’s nothing worse than having to put everything on pause and disrupting your flow because you ran out of garbage bags. Before you start, make a list of all the supplies you’ll need and gather them all in one place. Here’s a small list to kick-start your own:

  • Garbage bags
  • Rubber/latex gloves
  • Sponges
  • Rags/cloths
  • Paper towel
  • Surface cleaners
  • Window cleaner
  • Vacuum bags

4. Break it up into sections

Attempting to clean your whole house all at once will likely feel overwhelming. Take on the task in small chunks so you feel more comfortable. Maybe that’s floor by floor or room by room, it’s up to you. Just remember to take a break after each section to gear back up for the next one!

5. Make a checklist

Something that can help break up your cleaning into sections and help you feel more accomplished is building a checklist. It can be incredibly satisfying to physically check items off a list and it will remind you of the progress you’re making. Here’s a spring cleaning checklist we found that can help you out if you don’t know where to start.

declutter

6. Be generous in decluttering

Everyone can be a bit of a pack rat or hoarder sometimes. Spring cleaning is a great time for you to get rid of some of the old stuff you don’t use or no longer works. Go through your closet and collect clothes you no longer wear to donate to your local homeless shelter, and throw away those old gadgets you said you were going to fix but keep never getting around to. Having less stuff and more open space will declutter your house and make you feel more relaxed. A good rule is if you haven’t used it in over a year, it’s time to let it go.

7. Treat yourself when you finish

You’ve worked hard, now it’s time for the fun stuff. Use your freshly cleaned oven to bake some cookies, use the extra space in your garage to finally start that DIY project, or even go out and buy your kids that puppy they’ve always wanted. (Ok, maybe not that last one or you’ll be Spring cleaning into December…) Just remember that you deserve a reward for your hard work!

We hope these tips help you with your spring clean as we welcome in the sunshine and warm weather!
