Tips for Promoting your SMB using Twitter

technology

Twitter is a multifaceted social media tool all businesses can benefit from using. It can be used as a promotional space for advertising and managing publicity, a customer service platform, and even a way to keep tabs on your competitors. Many large corporations have taken advantage of Twitter, but what about small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs)?

Research shows people who follow SMBs on Twitter develop a higher affinity towards your business, impact the top line for your business, and are long-term customers.

Did you know that 85% of Twitter users feel more connected to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) after following them? – Twitter

This means large companies are not the only ones who should see the value Twitter has to offer. If you’re the owner of a SMB, don’t be discouraged if your business does not have hundreds of Twitter followers. This interactive tool shows the value even one follower adds to your business. However, to maximize your efforts, we’ll review the tactics Twitter lists to grow and engage your follower base that we find most useful and effective.

Add a follow button to your website

Integrating Twitter – as well as your other social media – with your business’ website is an easy way to increase your visibility, and in turn, traffic. We recommend also adding a ‘Share’ button, so your followers and customers can easily share your content and promotions with others. Click here to learn how to add these buttons to your business’ website.

Get found with hashtags

Twitter mentions using #smallbiz and #shopsmall. We suggest using any of the following hashtags: #SmallBusiness, #SMB, #ShopLocal, #EntrepreneurLife, #Leadership, #StartupLife, #YourCompanyName. You can also use hashtags that relate to your particular field – tags your client base will use and look for.

Collaborate with others

This is our favourite of Twitter’s tips, which is why we’re launching a project to collaborate with other SMBs across Canada. If you’re a small business in Canada, follow these 3 steps to get re-tweeted by 411.ca:

  1. Make sure you’re following @411dotca on Twitter
  2. Post a tweet mentioning the locations your business serves (e.g. Montreal, St. John’s, Niagara Falls)
  3. Tag @411dotca in your tweet and we will re-tweet it to our followers

Between this project and implementing some of the other tactics mentioned above, your SMB will begin to develop a larger, more connected and engaged Twitter community. Don’t forget these other tips as well, to maximize your business’ social media usage.
