There are times in all of our lives when we experience difficulties. We may feel as though we are struggling to stay afloat as waves of stress, conflict, or pain threaten to overwhelm us and pull us under. While we may not be able to stop the waves, counselling can help us to discover strategies and make changes that will not only help us stay afloat, but increase our sense of strength and confidence to manage whatever comes our way. Counselling is a collaborative process that begins with identifying your goals and clarifying a plan to help you achieve what you want out of life. These plans can be adjusted at any time to best meet your needs and to manage any barriers that may be getting in the way. Many people find that counselling increases personal insight and wisdom, which can lead to living a more meaningful, joyful and authentic life.

Joyce Achtnig is a registered psychologist and Canadian Certified Counsellor and founder of the Alberta Counselling Centre, a private practice focused on providing thorough psycho-educational assessments and psychotherapy for children, adolescents, and adults. She possesses a comprehensive understanding of children who exhibit exceptionalities, and how psychoeducational reports can be utilized to support their unique learning profiles by providing appropriate educational programming to facilitate their academic success. She has developed expertise in screening for Autism Spectrum Disorder, giftedness, Specific Learning Disorders, Intellectual Disability, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in children, adolescents, and adults. Joyce approaches assessments with a unique understanding and from multiple perspectives, that of a teacher, a parent, and an experienced clinician. She is a permanently certified Alberta teacher and former high school teacher, with a solid background in educational psychology and special education. She also has three children and has children in the GATE program. Joyce offers free, 30 minute, no-commitment consultations to any parents or individuals who are interested in an assessment. This free consultation can take place in person, over the phone, or over Skype. PSYCHOTHERAPY: Joyce makes it easier for you to benefit from therapy; she provides direct billing options and the convenience of receiving treatment in-office, through online video counselling, or telephone sessions. Joyce also has a keen interest and experience in treating trauma, and is an approved provider for Veteran Affairs Canada (VAC), the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and Citizens Immigration Canada (CIC).
Hi! I’m Kayla Barbour, a Registered Psychologist in the province of Alberta (#4061). I was on my way to becoming a scientific researcher (mice, labs, the whole works) when I decided I’d be better off catering to my inner therapist instead. I completed a Master of Counselling degree through Athabasca University, where I learned therapy techniques and models of psychotherapy. Connecting with people was something that came naturally, but it wasn’t until I joined the working world and began doing therapy that I learned how to harness the power of the human spirit. I quickly realized that people who were coming to me for help knew what they wanted out of life, but they weren’t quite sure how to get there. It was as if stumbling blocks were getting in the way of them finding happiness and fulfillment. Once we worked together to identify solutions to the blocks, they quickly found that happiness was indeed within reach. I soon learned that my passion is helping people get “unstuck” in order to make their ideal life a reality. Using a solution focused approach I’ve helped clients in outpatient and inpatient settings attend to concerns such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, decision making, self-esteem, eating disorders, and anger management. I’m also a big fan of using cognitive behavioral therapy and teaching skills like effective communication, emotional regulation, and mindfulness in order to help people improve relationships, cope with stress, and stop worrying. I decided to start counselling online because it is so flexible and convenient for clients. I love how online therapy allows people to seek help who may not be able to otherwise. No lineups, no driving, no going out in snowy weather, no waiting rooms…what more could you ask for?
