Freedom Now Yoga Studio and clothing boutique is situated in the heart of downtown Courtenay, on 5th Street in the beautiful Comox Valley, Canada. Cindy met Gary while both travelling the world and they started their journey of self- discovery together. The path led them to India where they received their yoga teacher certification and realized their calling to help others find inner peace and the freedom to shine. After running Abundance Yoga Centre in Cape Town, South Africa for the last 10 years they have returned to Courtenay in the Comox Valley to offer a shelter in a storm and a place where you will feel safe and nurtured enough to release the belly giggles that are so often trapped behind the conditioning of the past and the tension created by our hectic lives. Gary and Cindy teach a meditative style of Yoga which, when you lay on the mat, transports you to that magical place: the PRESENT MOMENT. This immersion into the now helps you to release the ‘fight and flight’ response that tension keeps us in. The body becomes supple and receptive to once again becoming an open channel of energy. You are simply returning to your natural state – perfect balance. Not only will you feel stronger, more healthy, calmer and centered; but others will notice and comment on your ‘glow’. We so look forward to meeting you in our Courtenay studio, and offering you the opportunity to give back to yourself. You may also find clothing in our boutique that will magnify your inner beauty and help you to express your true, essential self. Freedom Now Yoga Studio also offers Swedish Relaxation massage, Aromatherapy massage and Reiki in their tranquil, therapy room. Please see our Workshops and Treatments page for upcoming events and courses. Freedom Now Yoga Studio is offering YOGA NOW. We do not believe that your current financial situation should dictate whether you are healthy and happy and it certainly shouldn’t inhibit your spiritual evolution. Albert Einstein wrote: “The problems in the world cannot be solved by thinking the way we thought when they were created”. In fact we believe that they cannot be solved by the thinking mind that is conditioned by the past and as a result restricted by the resultant fear of loss in the future, but rather by feeling. We are leaving the Piscean age and entering the Aquarian age; with it goes the controlling, dominating and destroying due to fear of lack and is replaced with intuition, giving without expectations, leading without trying to control and holding without possessing. Of course this requires from us that we get out of the head, at least for an hour and a half yoga class and start to feel again. The current global financial crisis is not loss, it is simply change. Change is never easy but if you have ever prayed for growth, for abundance and for peace, then you have opened yourself up to release that which was restricting this. It is in these storms of change that we all need a lighthouse. YOGA NOW is a donation based yoga system where you pay what you can afford on the day. We are now offering all our classes on a pay what you can afford, donation basis. There will be a donation box at the reception where you can drop your investment. All our regular memberships are still available for those who can afford them; and only members will be able to book classes. We are not devaluing yoga but emphasizing the importance of yoga and the urgent need for a realization of oneness in the world. “Be the change that you desire to see in the world”. Mahatma Gandhi

Gary and Cindy Fort have returned to Courtenay, Comox Valley BC after 15 years to start Freedom Now Yoga Studio. Their journeys have taken them to India where they received their yoga teacher certification from The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Dhanwantari Ashram in Kerala. Their quest for knowledge lead them to be instructed further by B.N.S. Iyengar in Mysore (Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga) and B.R. Rudra Dev in Riskikesh (B.K.S. Iyengar style yoga). Yoga instructor CynthiaTheir path lead them to Cape Town, South Africa; where they were instrumental in the transition toward peace in the country. Abundance Yoga Centre was started 10 years ago to help ‘manifest peace from the inside out’. Gary and Cindy also helped people suffering from alcoholism, drug addiction, mental and eating disorders in finding fulfillment within, at various rehabilitation clinics in Cape Town. Gary's experience in the Agolan war in 1987 has given him a first hand understanding of how the horrors of war echo long after the last shot is fired; and so life has qualified him to help those suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome through the practice of Yoga. Gary and Cindy's desire was also to reach the people that were financially unable to attend yoga classes due to the aftermath of apartheid; and as such started The Yoga Accessibilty Programme. In 2002 they trained Busiswa Qobo, a woman from a previously disadvantaged background and a recovering alcoholic and raised funds for her to travel to India to receive her yoga teachers certification. Busiswa returned, after never before leaving her province, to teach yoga classes and council young children for free in the informal settlements of Cape Town. In 2006 Gary and Cindy’s service to society extended further to start the Abundance Recycling Initiative; which was founded to educate people about the need for recycling and follow through with the actual collection thereof. Abundance Recycling received the Real Simple Green Innovation Award for best green service in 2008; and to this day collects over a ton of recycling per day and has resulted in the instigation of many other collection services.
