• Small businesses make up 97.9% of all businesses in Canada
• Small businesses employ 70.5% of the total private labour force
• High-growth firms are present in every economic sector
• Over 80% of start-ups used personal financing to finance their new businesses
• Between 2011 and 2013, small businesses accounted for 27% of total research and development expenditures
• In 2013, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) accounted for 25.2% of Canada’s exported goods
• In 2014, small businesses contributed an average of 30% to the GDP of their province
• In 2014, 15.7% of SMEs were majority owned by women and 19.7 percent were equally owned by women and men
