PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) came out with their latest Cities of Opportunity report early September and ranked Toronto the third best place to work and live. PwC releases this report every 2 years and this is the 7th report they’ve put out. Since the last, we’ve risen one spot from number four.

The global study ranks the top 30 cities with a set of indicators and variables put together to examine the social and economic qualities that make a city boom.

Raj Kothari of PwC Canada stated:

It makes us proud to see Toronto performing so well against many of these renowned global cities. Toronto’s strong performance in metrics related to quality of life and economic potential are consistent with the realities of a city that has been internationally recognized for its cultural diversity, growing community of entrepreneurs, and accessible health care system, social services and education.

Why We Did So Well

Toronto ranked well among the 30 other cities, placing first for the overall quality of life of its citizens, as well as top 5 for health, safety, and security. The city also did well when it was ranked for the ease of doing business, innovation, and entrepreneurial efforts, as well as other things.

What Brought Us Down

There are a few downfalls to living and working in the city, such as the housing costs, which Toronto ranked 19th out of 30 for. Another downfall was the need for improvement in transit options to help solve traffic congestion, mass transit coverage, and airport connectivity, which make it difficult to connect people to businesses and communities.

Toronto may be known as the 6ix, but we clearly have a lot more to offer than that. Our city boasts multiculturalism, with over 50% of the residents being born outside of Canada and over 230 different nationalities.

Toronto is also made up of many different neighbourhoods that make each area unique. From Cabbagetown to Little Italy and the Annex to Liberty Village there is a place for everyone. Each neighbourhood is prime place for small businesses and entrepreneurs to thrive, with each area promoting unique opportunities.

Ahead of Toronto is London in first place and Singapore in second, but we surpassed Paris (#4), Amsterdam(#5) and New York (#6) on the list.
