Regardless of the time of year, there are always things to be done around the house. But around late fall, the work seems to pile up more than usual.

To help you out, we’ve put together a checklist to winterize your yard. Whether you put in the work yourself or have a pro take care of it, you’ll be happy you checked these off your list when the snow thaws – and even more so if you’re looking to capitalize on the spring 2016 real estate market.

Lawn Care

✔︎ Rake away the leaves and debris once all the leaves have fallen – these can be composted and used in next year’s garden

✔︎ De-weed your lawn so you have weed free grass come spring

✔︎ Fertilize your grass – visit your local garden centre for information about suitable products

✔︎ Consider aerating to ensure the fertilizer gets deep into the soil

✔︎ Continue cutting your grass until growth slows

Plant and Tree Care

✔︎ Certain plants, such as herbaceous peonies and hostas, must be cut back to avoid disease

✔︎ Pruning other plants and trees is not absolutely necessary, but will definitely make things easier in the spring – Canadian Gardening has some tips on the best time to prune different plants

✔︎ Remove broken branches from trees

✔︎ Place mulch around your plants to protect them from the cold

General Outdoor Cleanup

✔︎ Clean out your eavestroughs – this is a tough but necessary job, so think about hiring a pro

Protect Outdoor Appliances, Tools, and furniture

✔︎ Cover your air conditioner to protect if from snow and ice

✔︎ Put away or cover your BBQ and outdoor furniture

✔︎  Winterize outdoor faucets to ensure your pipes don’t burst

We hope this post will help you check “winterize the yard” off your to-do list! Do you have something to add to our checklist? Tweet us at @411dotca to let us know!
