This morning, before I made my way into work, I found myself in a very familiar place: At the back of a very long line at my neighbourhood coffee house. You’ve been there, right?

I don’t like waiting in lines, ever, but I do it every morning, even on the weekends, when the coffee house is twice as busy.

There’s a coffee shop just two blocks east of my regular jaunt (it’s even closer to my house), but I’m willing to wait right where I am, in a long line, even though it will cost me an extra 10 minutes of my morning, and even though I could pay 25 cents less for the exact same double espresso down the street.

So, why do I do wait?

After my obligatory 10-minutes toe-tapping in line, checking my Blackberry and looking at the art on the walls, every time I get to the front of the line, there are three things that make the wait worthwhile:

1.      “Good morning, Sandy.”

2.      “$3, please. Thank you.”

3.      “Coffee is ready at the end of the bar. See you tomorrow!”

When I know there’s a 12-hour work day ahead me, these details are a small, but appreciated, pleasure. I may wait in line for 10-minutes, sure, but I never wait for my coffee. And I may look at the ceiling or at the walls to occupy my time as wait, but when I get to the counter, the cashier knows who I am.
