As summer comes to an end, we’re all rejoicing in the fact that the kids are going back to school and everyone’s getting back to having proper schedules. But with the end of the break comes the end of summer blues. Gone are the days where you can stay out late without having to change into warmer clothes, having picnics under the sun, taking a midnight stroll, or going for an outdoor swim. Although summer’s coming to an end, these fall activities will help you overcome the warm weather blues.

Harvest Picking

When: Late August to Mid October

We like to think that while many fruits are in season for the summer, the best are saved for last. Apple and pumpkin picking season is here and they are the signature crops of fall (also perfect for pies!). There are many farms on the outskirts of the GTA that are family friendly and allow you to pick your own variety of crops. Activities also include petting farms and corn mazes. Most farms require an entrance fee followed by a fee for the fruits you picked, but it’s all fair. We support local businesses.

Not into picking your own fruits and vegetables? There are a number of fall farmers’ markets around Toronto such as the St. Lawerence Market and the Trinity Bellwoods Farmers Market.

TIFF

When: September 8-18

It’s that time of year again. The Toronto International Film Festival is in town and the city streets get taken over by Hollywood. For 11 days, films will be playing in various locations around Toronto, featuring the most renowned filmmakers such as Tom Ford, Jeff Nichols to name a few. If you aren’t able to score some tickets, you can try and spot some of the celebs around Toronto and in some of the major hotels, clubs, and restaurants. Advance tickets are already on sale and adult tickets start at $25 for regular screenings and $49 for premium (red carpet) screenings.

This year’s line up includes James Bay, Death Cab For Cutie, Dropkick Murphy’s, Barenaked Ladies, Jimmy Eat World, and more. Taking place at Fort Garrison Common National Historic, if you’re a music lover, it’s the place to be.

Nuit Blanche

When: October 1st

Nuit Blanche is an art show throughout the streets of Toronto. It features over 90 contemporary art projects created and presented by over 300 local, national, and international artists. The best part is that it’s from sunset to sunrise and it’s FREE–the only thing you’ll have to worry about is trying to stay warm. Start the night by grabbing dinner, then go explore, and grab breakfast when it’s over.

Watch the leaves change colour

Everyone’s favorite fall pastime is watching the gorgeous trees change from green to a range of red, orange and yellow. Live in the city? Try getting away for the weekend and head to Algonquin park, Elora Gorge, Caledon or the Halliburton Highlands.
