5 Steps to Developing a Strong Corporate Culture

Corporate culture is a popular topic at the moment, and rightfully so. The reason it’s so hot right now is because of recent data suggesting corporate culture is one of, if not the most important driving forces when it comes to millennial job seekers. With millennials officially being the biggest generation in the Canadian Workforce, this isn’t something to take lightly.

 

Having a strong culture within your company has many benefits aside from making you more attractive to job seekers. It improves employee morale and retention, and increases your brand reputation. This directly impacts the success of the company as a whole.

 

To develop a strong company culture, follow these five steps:

 

Determine your core values

If you’re a business owner, it’s probably tough to take the time to sit and think about exactly how your business should operate. Take a minute to think if you worked for you, how would you want the work environment to be? What would make you love working there? It could be job flexibility, a strong commission structure, or simply a fun and friendly environment.

Have a vision and stick to it

Similar to the first step, every successful company is built off of a vision. Developing a product? Strive to build the best product ever. In customer service? Provide the best customer service possible. Employees love a rallying cry they can get behind. A good example that comes to mind is Shopify’s “Get Shit Done,” encompassing its culture of trusting employees with full autonomy to do good work.

 

Communicate

The most important step in this list, communication is crucial. Develop a good foundation for communication right from the get go and keep everyone informed. Ask questions and take feedback from employees. Make sure you are communicating the vision and core values of the company with everyone. It is easier with a small group but as your company grows it is important to keep this in mind to prevent silos.

 

Lead by example

Don’t just delegate, do. Try to be involved with as many aspects of your company as possible. Keep up with every employee and offer help. To tie in with the previous step, good leaders value the importance of transparency and open communication, and relay this with their team. This builds trust and commitment from employees, preventing them from wanting to leave. This step will be easy once you’ve determined core values and a vision, because a good leader will embody them.

Treat your employees

Our last blog talked about the importance of team building, a vital step in keeping employees engaged and happy. Rewarding employees with the occasional night out is a win-win, because it builds stronger relationships and increases motivation. You also want to reward them with development. Promoting internally plays into employee trust, satisfaction and performance.

 

Once your company’s culture is established, maintaining it will be easy. Having a team of employees that respect the same vision and values you do as an owner is rewarding. Another benefit of having an established culture is online reputation. Majority of job seeking millennials look to social media and website like Glassdoor or Indeed to confer whether or not they want to work somewhere. Happy employees will leave happy reviews.
